Hospice Holds “Camp Sunshine” For Area Bereaved Children

In an effort to help brighten the lives of Chesterfield and Marlboro County children who have recently lost a loved one, Hospice of Chesterfield County held its 12th annual bereavement camp for children, Camp Sunshine, on July 31. Children, ages 5-12 from throughout the area, attended the one-day camp held at the Chesterfield Family YMCA. The camp was designed to help children cope with the recent loss of a family member. The children in attendance were able to express their grief through a variety of activities. The children gave tribute to their loved ones through art and also wrote letters to their loved one. Hospice Seeking ‘Friends’

Hospice of Chesterfield County has started a “Friends of Hospice” initiative to help raise funds to meet the growing needs for hospice care in Chesterfield and Marlboro counties. As a community-based, non-profit organization, Hospice of Chesterfield County maximizes its resources to provide the highest quality and compassionate care to our area’s terminally ill residents. In the past 10 years, Hospice of Chesterfield County’s patient care days have increased 240% from 5,428 to 18,458. This increase in the utilization of our services has also resulted in an increase in the amount of indigent care we provide. Ninety Local Churches Partnering With Hospice

Ninety local churches have now partnered with Hospice of Chesterfield County through the agency’s Watchman Program. This special church-hospice partnership program was implemented to help ensure that people receive quality end-of-life care sooner in their diagnosis regardless of where they live, their diagnosis, age or economic status.The goal of Hospice of Chesterfield County’s Watchman Program is to identify and train a representative in every congregation in Chesterfield County who will serve as the Hospice Watchman Representative in that congregation. This hospice trained representative will serve as a liaison between Hospice and the church, conveying the needs of the church family to Hospice as soon as those needs arise. New Board Member Welcomed

Hospice of Chesterfield County is pleased to welcome Jane Johnson to its board of directors.   Johnson was elected to her first three-year term as a board member at the agency’s annual meeting on June 23. Johnson resides in Jefferson with her husband, Dwight.  The Johnsons have one daughter, Megan J. Harris.  A graduate of Winthrop University,  Johnson earned a Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina.     She is employed as a special education teacher at Jefferson Elementary.  She is a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church where she serves on the Church Council and as an adult class Sunday School teacher.  She is a member of the Jefferson Board of Zoning Appeals.
